The Old Shanghai Municipal Stadium

The Old Shanghai Municipal Stadium is a municipal cultural heritage site of Shanghai.

The Old Shanghai Municipal Stadium is located at 346 Guohe Road, Jiangwan Stadium. It is one of the buildings of the "Greater Shanghai Plan," completed in October 1935. It was also designed by Mr. Dong and, with its distinctive form, made a bold impression on the history of Chinese architecture.

The sports field is the centerpiece of the entire stadium and is elliptical in shape, consisting of a running track and a surrounding grandstand. The track includes a 500-meter oval loop divided into eight lanes, with straight sections 220 meters in length on the east and west sides (at the time, international competitions included a 200-meter sprint event). Inside the track are throwing and high jump areas, with a football pitch in the center. To the north of the football field is a tennis court, and to the south is a martial arts area. The grandstands on the east and west sides feature three-arch gate-like pavilions as their command stands. The three large artificial white stone arches stand 8 meters tall and are adorned with traditional Chinese carvings such as cloud patterns, flame motifs, and lotus designs. At the top of each arch, on the left and right, sits a large bronze tripod used to hold the blazing torch that symbolizes the spirit of sportsmanship. Above the arches are inscribed plaques bearing the phrases “National Bastion,” “Martial Valor Flourishes,” and “Unyielding Self-Strengthening.”

Jiangwan Stadium is listed as a municipal cultural heritage site in the fifth batch of municipal protected heritage units.
