Harbin Martyrs' Cemetery

The Harbin Martyrs' Cemetery was built in 1948. It is a key national-level protected martyrs’ memorial site and a cultural heritage site under the protection of Heilongjiang Province. Located at No. 1 Tiyu Street, Dongli District, Harbin, it spans an area of 40,000 square meters and is classified as a key national martyrs’ memorial building. In November 1948, the remains of General Zhu Rui, Commander of the Artillery of the Northeast People's Liberation Army, were interred here. The cemetery consists of a martyrs' deeds exhibition hall, a martyrs' memorial hall, and martyrs' tombs, among other structures. The name "Harbin Martyrs' Cemetery" was inscribed by Zhang Aiping, Marshal of China.

Harbin Martyrs' Cemetery The entire cemetery is shaded by lush pines and cypresses, green all year round, and offers a serene, solemn, and meticulously maintained environment. Within the grounds lie the tombs of 17 martyrs including General Zhu Rui, Commander of the Artillery of the Northeast People's Liberation Army; Chen Hanzhang, Commander of the Third Route Army of the First Corps of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army; Wang Yachen, Commander of the 10th Army of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army; Lu Dongsheng, Commander of the Songjiang Military District and Harbin Garrison Command; and Wang Fengjiang, a combat hero. There is also a mass grave containing the remains of 21 martyrs.

The tomb of General Zhu Rui is located at the center of the cemetery. Built in October 1953, the tombstone stands 7 meters tall, has a rectangular shape, and is milky white, constructed from white marble and granite. The front of the tombstone pedestal bears an inscription composed and presented by the Harbin Municipal People’s Government and its citizens. General Zhu Rui’s coffin is buried beneath the tombstone. Behind his tomb is the Martyrs' Deeds Exhibition Hall and the Martyrs' Memorial Hall, covering an exhibition area of 300 square meters. The exhibition hall displays precious historical photos, written materials, and artifacts depicting the lives of General Zhu Rui and other notable martyrs. The Martyrs' Memorial Hall features a list of the names of 1,628 martyrs from Harbin and houses the urns of 152 martyrs.
