Harbin Shangzhi Park

Shangzhi Park is located on the south side of Gongbin Road, covering an area of 7.6 hectares. Before liberation, it was a green space dominated by elm trees. In 1958, Xiangfang People’s Commune decided to transform the site into Xiangfang Park and implemented construction projects including simple wooden fences, two antique pavilions, and additional shrub planting. After more than forty years of construction and development, Xiangfang Park rose to the rank of a first-class park in Heilongjiang Province in the 1990s and became well-known for hosting multiple lantern festivals.

On April 24, 2001, in accordance with the environmental improvement requirements of the Harbin Municipal People's Government, Xiangfang Park underwent an open-style renovation and upgrade. The park was divided into four functional areas: the central plaza area near the entrance, the plant viewing area, the leisure and fitness area, and the activity zones for seniors and children. Following the renovation, the layout of Xiangfang Park became more rational, fully reflecting the people-oriented design concept. The area of hardened pavement reached 14,700 square meters, the lawn area covered 4,560 square meters, and the park built facilities totaling 1,000 square meters, with a total investment of 5 million yuan for the renovation. In 2005, a new artificial river embankment railing was installed, along with the replacement of bridge railings, installing a total of 690 linear meters of white marble railings. To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, and in accordance with the unified deployment of the municipal Party committee, Xiangfang Park was officially renamed Shangzhi Park, and the statue of the martyr was also re-erected.

The current Shangzhi Park is a modern urban garden that integrates traditional architecture with contemporary landscaping art, highlighting the profound cultural heritage of the Chinese nation. The park features lush trees, abundant flowers, varied pavilions and towers, and pleasant scenery.

In 2004, the First Chrysanthemum Exhibition of Heilongjiang Province, China, was held in Xiangfang Park, hosted by the Harbin Municipal People’s Government and the Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Construction. To highlight this chrysanthemum exhibition and promote traditional culture, the Xiangfang District Party Committee and District Government decided to build a unique large-scale stone carving work in the park—the “Chinese Chrysanthemum Historical and Cultural Wall.” The completed wall stretches 388 linear meters and consists of 172 carved pieces. The main material used is high-quality bluestone from Shandong, with accents of classical Chinese pavilions, corridors, and trellises. The cultural wall systematically showcases the origin, development, evolution, and the profound historical and cultural significance of the chrysanthemum.

Shangzhi Park receives 3 million visitors annually, with a peak daily attendance of up to 20,000. In 2005, it was named one of the top ten parks in Harbin. The park also offers recreational facilities such as paddle boats, a children’s amusement world, a roller skating rink, and a table tennis court.
