Harbin Jingyu Park

Jingyu Park was first built in 1917, originally covering an area of 52,000 square meters. It is one of the earliest parks constructed in the city. It was initially named “Dongsijiazi Park,” renamed “Binjiang Park” in 1919, and later changed to “Daowai Park” after the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

In 1985, the park was named “Jingyu Park” in honor of the anti-Japanese national hero General Yang Jingyu. In 2000, city leaders carried out a comprehensive renovation of Jingyu Park, transforming it from a closed to an open public park. In 2003, the Daowai District Committee and District Government upgraded the park to promote the development of a “garden city” and enhance urban construction standards. They constructed the city’s largest memorial square, covering an area of over 5,000 square meters. The park now spans a total area of 5 hectares.

On July 19, 2004, the iconic sculpture in Daowai District's Jingyu Park—the bronze statue of martyr Yang Jingyu—was unveiled. After the upgrade, Jingyu Park has become an open memorial park integrating ideological, artistic, and recreational elements. It serves as an important patriotic education base and a moral education center for minors in the city.

Yang Jingyu (1905–1940), originally named Ma Shangde, also known as Zhang Guanyi, with the courtesy name Runsheng and the literary name Jisheng, was born in February 1905 (the 31st year of the Guangxu reign in the Qing Dynasty) into a peasant family in Liwan Village, Queshan County, Henan Province. In 1923 (the 12th year of the Republic of China), he enrolled in the Industrial School of Kaifeng, Henan. In 1927 (the 16th year of the Republic of China), he joined the Chinese Communist Party. He once served as Secretary of the Henan South Special Committee of the CPC and led the Queshan Peasant Uprising and the Liujiamiao Uprising.
