As a promoter and leader of freestyle skiing, Nanshan Ski Resort has consistently enhanced the experience for freestyle skiing enthusiasts through improvements in ski slope infrastructure and equipment upgrades.
During the 2013–14 season, Nanshan Ski expanded the back mountain area, adding new slopes and tow lifts that help skiers save time waiting in lift lines and allow them to fully enjoy their skiing experience. The back mountain area has become another favorite spot for Nanshan skiers. Designed as a dedicated practice venue for off-piste and powder skiing enthusiasts, the newly built intermediate moguls (MOGUL) slope in the back mountain helps skiers build the skills needed for more advanced runs at Nanshan and for skiing abroad. This slope features a 150-meter-long semi-circular snow berm on the right side, allowing skiers to practice advanced techniques such as short turns with leg retraction, tail jumps, and dolphin turns along the fall line. In addition, the advanced moguls slope has been extended downward by 260 meters. The double-black-diamond section of Nanshan’s advanced slope — an extremely steep, irregular, ungroomed terrain — is reserved for expert skiers who are either preparing for overseas ski trips or have experience with off-piste skiing or backcountry skiing in western China. This section allows for practicing jumps and turns. A new high-capacity tow lift enables skiers to return to the mid-station of the double chairlift in the back mountain for a separate loop.
A wide range of skiing events attract numerous skiing enthusiasts to Nanshan. Snowboarders can take part in the Red Bull Nanshan Open, a WST five-star event that is the longest-running and most influential international snowboarding competition in China, as well as the highest-level freestyle snowboarding event in Asia. Meanwhile, the Nanshan Amateur Mogul Skiing Hero Competition, now in its sixth consecutive year, is one of the most talked-about mass-participation skiing events in the country. In recent years, winners and runners-up from both the men's and women's categories of the Nanshan Amateur Mogul Skiing Hero Competition have skied all over Japan, France, Switzerland, and the United States. It is precisely because of their mogul skiing skills that they are able to handle natural powder snow overseas with greater ease.
On February 23, 2014, the 7th Nanshan Amateur Mogul Skiing Hero Competition in Canada will commence on the intermediate and advanced mogul slopes at Nanshan Ski Resort. Amateur freestyle skiers will gather at Nanshan, where skiing icons Glen Plake and Chelsea Henitiuk will serve as honorary head judge and head judge respectively, joining the competitors to deliver an exciting mogul skiing show. The 7th Nanshan Amateur Mogul Skiing Hero Competition in Canada is sponsored by Tourism Canada. The winners and runners-up will receive a 7-day, 6-night Banff skiing trip to Alberta, Canada (including skiing at Mt. Norquay and Sunshine Village), plus 2 nights’ accommodation in Calgary.
