Harbin Medical University
Harbin Medical University is located on the west side of Baojian Road. Its predecessor was the Sanitary School of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, established in Ruijin, Jiangxi in 1931. It was renamed China Medical University in 1940. In 1946, it moved to Harbin and merged with the Harbin Medical Specialized School to officially establish Harbin Medical University.
The university offers undergraduate programs lasting five years in medicine, hygiene, stomatology, health inspection, biomedical engineering and instrumentation (jointly run with the Harbin Ship Engineering College), nutrition and food hygiene, nursing, and radiological medicine. There are also six-year programs in Russian and Japanese language medical classes, and three-year programs in health management specialty. Five disciplines have the authority to award doctoral degrees, and 41 disciplines can confer master's degrees. In recent years, research in areas such as reproductive physiology, medical genetics, nutrition, and food hygiene has been at the forefront in China. Particularly notable achievements have been made in the study of Keshan disease, Kaschin-Beck disease, lung cancer metastasis, and its prevention and treatment.
In 1990, the university had 5,700 faculty and staff members, including 154 professors, researchers, and chief physicians; and 361 associate professors, associate researchers, and associate chief physicians. It has become the center for medical education, medical scientific research, and healthcare prevention work in Heilongjiang Province.
