Founded in 1958 and located in the middle section of Xuefu Road, Harbin University of Science and Technology originated from the Heilongjiang Institute of Technology. In 1978, it was expanded into Harbin University of Science and Technology and came under the administration of the Ministry of Mechanical Industry. The university had five departments, two divisions, eleven majors, and five research laboratories. Research areas included instruments, meters, theory and application of modeling, tin wire expansion grinding, white cast iron, and laser holography applications, among others.
