Raohe Xiaonanshan

Xiaonanshan is situated on the middle reaches of the Ussuri River, south of Raohe County. The mountain features two peaks: the main peak, Dananshan, rises to 106 meters above sea level, while Xiaonanshan, located to the north, is under 100 meters high. When viewed from north to south, the two peaks blend seamlessly into one, making it the sole elevated terrain spanning over 200 li along the river. Xiaonanshan is shaded by green trees, filled with birdsong and floral scents, and covered with hundreds of species of shrubs such as oak, birch, poplar, and linden.

Below the mountain, the Ussuri River meanders by, encircling the area with scattered islets. Nestled at the foot of Nanshan is a lake branch densely lined with riverside willows, formed from the silted-up ancient channel of the Ussuri River. In the dry season, the water forms a chain-like pattern, functioning as an independent system; during floods, it turns into a network of diverging streams and creeks. In summer and autumn, when you climb the mountain and look out, the winding river resembles a snake or a chain, with its branches looking like claws, evoking the charm of West Lake.

As the ancients said, “A mountain need not be high — it is famous if it is home to an immortal.” The fame of Xiaonanshan is well deserved. On the eastern slope of Xiaonanshan, stone axes, jade artifacts, and pottery unearthed in 1971 prove that this was a settlement of the ancient Sushen people and residents from the Bohai period over two thousand years ago, dating back to the Neolithic Age. At the foot of the cliff of Dananshan, seven mammoth molars and chipped stone tools were excavated, indicating human habitation here as early as 10,000 years ago. The mountain also preserves trenches and tunnels from the wartime resistance period, which remain well-preserved to this day.

On Xiaonanshan, there is a county cultural relics museum and an Anti-Japanese War Heroes Monument, which is a national key cultural relic protection unit. The front of the monument bears an inscription by former Governor Chen Lei: “Raohe Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Memorial Monument,” written in ten large characters. It also features a stone sculpture of an anti-Japanese soldier; the total height of the sculpture and the monument is 16.6 meters. The back (southern side) of the stone monument is inscribed with eight characters: “Anti-Japanese Martyrs, Forever Remembered Through the Ages.”
