The Xingkai Lake Lotus Tourist Area covers a total area of 4,380 square kilometers, with the northern part belonging to China (1,080 square kilometers) and the southern part to Russia. It stretches 98 kilometers from north to south and 50 kilometers from east to west. With an average depth of 3 meters and a maximum depth of 10 meters, the lake is shaped like a gourd or a lute, holding a water storage capacity of 28.3 billion cubic meters and boasting national first-class water quality. It is known for its "vast waters and majestic presence." Xiaoxingkai Lake is an inland lake in China, covering an area of 176 square kilometers, and is famed for its "dense reed marshes, abundant fishing, and beautiful waters." It is a tectonic lake formed approximately 100 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period when geological movements caused the Xingkai Lake region to subside along three fault lines. Initially a chain of bead-like lakes, they merged into three slightly larger ribbon-like lakes. By the mid-Paleogene period, the depression developed further, the ribbon lakes deepened, and the three bodies of water connected to form the expansive Greater Xingkai Lake. By the end of the Paleogene and the beginning of the Neogene (Quaternary), the basin began to uplift, causing the vast waters of Greater Xingkai Lake to gradually recede. By the end of the Neogene and the early Quaternary, the central uplift zone emerged entirely above water, and as the lake shrank, it was divided into northern and southern sections by this uplift.

Entering the Quaternary period, primarily influenced by tectonic movements as well as changes in climate—cold and warm, dry and wet—six episodes of lake regression and one of lake transgression occurred, ultimately leaving behind this vast, sea-like oval lake in the southern part of the basin.

The Xingkai Lake wetlands cover an area of 2,225 square kilometers and connect with wetlands across the border in Russia, making up one of the world’s three largest wetland complexes. The wetlands are extremely rich in wildlife resources, home to 235 species of globally important migratory birds, including nine Class I protected bird species: golden eagles, white-tailed sea eagles, Steller’s sea eagles, white-tailed eagles, oriental white storks, red-crowned cranes, Siberian cranes, white-naped cranes, and scaly-sided mergansers. Over 100 wild red-crowned cranes nest and breed here, making it the country’s largest migratory bird stopover.

It is hailed as a "paradise for migratory birds."

The topmouth culter (Xingkai Lake whitefish) is one of China’s four famous freshwater fish, the Chinese softshell turtle is a globally endangered species, and the Xingkai Lake pine is a unique tree species native to the area.

The scenery of Xingkai Lake is magical, simple, naturally beautiful, and pleasant, with geological heritage sites such as Greater and Xiaoxingkai Lakes, Hugang (Lake Ridge), Fengmihill, Song’acha Estuary, and volcanic crater remnants. Ecological landscapes include the gathering of thousands of birds at the lake outlet, vertical vegetation zones on Hugang, and the forested islands of Dongbei Pao.
