Changchun Beihu National Wetland Park
Changchun Beihu National Wetland Park is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, a national water conservancy scenic area, and a national wetland park.
Changchun Beihu National Wetland Park is located in the northern part of Changchun, within the northern district of the Changchun High-Tech Industrial Development Zone. It lies at the core of the development strategy area outlined in the Chang-Ji-Tu Plan. The planned area extends from Sihua Bridge in the south to Yijianpu Railway Bridge in the north, from the Beijing-Harbin Railway in the west to Yuanda Street in the east, with geographical coordinates between 125°39′00″ to 125°35′61″ east longitude and 43°96′72″ to 44°00′50″ north latitude. The planned area covers 11.97 square kilometers, including 7.37 square kilometers of land and 4.6 square kilometers of water surface, and is situated 13 kilometers from the city center. On May 29, 2014, it was approved as a national 4A-level tourist attraction.
For a long time, the Yitong River has been prone to frequent flooding. The section from Sihua Bridge to Yijianpu Bridge along the Yitong River is a key flood control project in the construction of the wetland park. The development of the wetland park also effectively addresses issues of sewage and garbage pollution. Approximately 650,000 cubic meters of sewage are directly or indirectly discharged into this area daily from the northern section of the Yitong River. The 260,000-square-meter Jinqianbao landfill site has mixed piles of household and construction waste totaling 2.4 million cubic meters, without any anti-seepage measures, causing serious pollution to the surrounding surface and groundwater. It is the main source of pollution in the northern section of the Yitong River, severely degrading the water quality and creating extremely poor living conditions for nearby residents. Once completed, the project will achieve three major functions: flood control and drainage, environmental management, and ecological restoration. By treating the pollution from the closed Jinqianbao landfill and intercepting sewage in the flood control zone of the northern Yitong River, the surrounding production and living environments will be significantly improved, the residential environment along both banks will be enhanced, and the overall capacity of the city will be elevated. The wetland park has already completed greening across 3.15 million square meters. There are 51 varieties of willow trees planted along Liudi, totaling 739 trees, including drought willow, white bark willow, golden weeping willow, golden branch willow, weeping willow, dragon beard willow, steamed bun willow, triandra willow, Mongolian willow, Songjiang willow, riverside willow, basket willow, rhubarb willow, Korean willow, and American fiber willow. In addition, a total of 69,700 trees of 186 species and 15,300 shrubs of 144 species have been planted.
The overall layout of the park is designed as “two zones and three belts” — a terraced natural adaptability structure that allows for a natural transition and harmonious integration between natural and artificial elements.
“Two Zones” – Inner Lake Area: Centered around human activities, this area integrates the protection of native pond wetland habitats with diverse urban services such as landscape appreciation, leisure, and entertainment.
“Two Zones” – Outer River Area: Focused on maintaining water conservancy functions, this area combines natural landscapes, wildlife habitats, and leisure viewing, with nature as the dominant feature.
“Three Belts” – Urban Leisure Function Belt: Located adjacent to the urban development zone, it creates a vibrant, artistically unique, activity-rich urban leisure district with concentrated service facilities.
“Three Belts” – Changdao Ecological Transition Belt: Serving as the boundary between the inner lake and outer river, this is the ecological “spine” of the park and a corridor where humans and nature blend. It forms a complete natural habitat gradient of lakes, ponds, slopes, and woodlands, altering the overly flat and monotonous spatial feel of the scenic area, adding layers to the landscape, and adjusting spatial proportions.
“Three Belts” – Green Ecological Buffer Zone: This is the dam and greenbelt area on the western side of the park, which isolates the impact of the railway and ensures the safety and tranquility of the natural wetland environment.
The project planning is based on protecting the ecological environment and emphasizing ecological restoration, aiming to create a beautiful environment where splendid natural scenery and rich cultural activities complement each other. It seeks to develop Changchun Beihu National Wetland Park into the first sustainable urban wetland park in Northeast China with international standards and exemplary significance in ecological restoration.
As a multifunctional urban wetland park, Changchun Beihu National Wetland Park will become a large-scale wetland ecological park with primary functions including wetland sightseeing, ecological protection and restoration, urban leisure, science education and exhibitions, artistic creativity, folk activities, religious culture, and sports and fitness. It will offer visitors a chance to experience Changchun’s unique natural regional characteristics and cultural vitality; provide local citizens with a green leisure park to reconnect with nature, engage with folk culture, appreciate art, and embrace a healthy lifestyle; and establish a high-quality living community for the development zone that is environmentally beautiful, distinctive, and fully equipped. Ultimately, it will shape a comprehensive urban wetland park complex that integrates lake-city harmony, ecological education, leisure and fitness, tourism and vacation, and folk art.
