Zhuzi Mountain Great Wall
The Zhuzi Mountain Great Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Zhuzi Mountain Great Wall spans a total length of 22,455 meters, running mostly from east to west, and is divided into six sections based on the mountainous terrain and local geography: namely the Damo Mountain Section, Zhuzi Mountain Section, Tuanmuchong Section, Manzhizhang Section, Shixiakou Section, and Jinniu Cave Section. Constructed in the 14th year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1381), the wall has withstood years of weathering and multiple wars, yet remains relatively well-preserved. Winding through the rugged peaks of the Yanshan Mountain range, it stands majestically with numerous watchtowers, forming an important part of the Great Wall. On June 10, 2006, it was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit. The Zhuzi Mountain Great Wall predominantly features stone construction, with some sections combining brick and stone, while others utilize the natural mountain ridges as defensive walls. The six sections are closely interconnected yet each possesses its own unique characteristics. The Damo Mountain Section features perilous mountain terrain with overlapping peaks, presenting a grand and imposing sight; the Zhuzi Mountain Section twists and turns, integrating three separate stretches of the Great Wall into one. To the south, via Jiukoukou, it leads directly to Shanhaiguan; to the west, beyond Damo Mountain, it exits Hebei’s Funing County and connects to Badaling and Juyongguan; to the east, through Manzhicao and Shixiakou, it reaches Jinniu Cave where the wall ends within the valley. The Tuanmuchong Section is built along particularly steep and strategic mountain slopes, constructed entirely of stone, with one watchtower containing the “Tuanmuchong Tower Inscription Stele,” and a brick stamped with the words “Dezhou Autumn Shift Construction,” providing valuable historical artifacts for the study of Great Wall relics. The Manzhizhang Section guards the valley entrance, with square brick watchtowers positioned roughly every hundred meters atop the hills, standing in solidarity and creating a picturesque scene. The Shixiakou Section follows a gentle slope, with walls made of large rough-hewn stones and featuring a water gate. The Jinniu Cave Section crosses the Shi River, built along the steep cliffs with massive construction efforts. As an important component of the ancient Great Wall—the vital military defense system of China—the Zhuzi Mountain Great Wall stands as an outstanding example of ancient Great Wall architecture and a shining jewel among the cultural heritage of the Chinese nation. It holds significant value for the study of the functionality and architectural concepts of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, as well as the ancient military defense systems. Adjacent to famous tourist attractions such as Jiukoukou and Shanhaiguan, it offers exceptional conditions for tourism development and has also contributed to the economic and social progress of the local area and surrounding regions.
