The Sandaogou Important Relics Area of the Liao Dynasty

The Sandaogou Important Relics Area of the Liao Dynasty is a cultural relic protection unit of Liaoning Province.

The Sandaogou Important Relics Area of the Liao Dynasty is located in the valley locally known as Sandaogou, on Camel Mountain and Huzi Mountain, within the administrative area of Futun Subdistrict Office, Beizhen City. It is the main burial site and architectural ruins area within the range of the Liao Dynasty’s Xianling Mausoleum, as well as the distribution area of relics, making it one of the key cultural heritage protection zones in Beizhen.

Sandaogou runs from the northwest to the southeast, stretching 6 kilometers from east to west and 3 kilometers from north to south, covering a total area of 18 square kilometers. Since 1980, archaeological surveys have identified over ten burial and ruins sites within this area, including the Xinli Liao Dynasty architectural ruins, Camel Mountain ruins, Pianpo Temple ruins, Xinli stone carvings, Pianlian Di ruins, Dishui Temple ruins, Liuyuanzi ruins, Small Stone Shed ruins, Cherry Valley East Slope ruins, and the Hongjia Tomb. Among these, two Liao tombs and nine architectural sites and stone carvings have been discovered. Notably, the Pianpo Temple ruins revealed a large complex of building foundations and stone-built walls extending 750 meters. Experts have confirmed this area as the main burial zone of the Xianling Mausoleum, while the Xinli Liao Dynasty architectural ruins are part of the auxiliary burial area.

The surviving tombs and large architectural foundations within the Sandaogou Important Relics Area of the Liao Dynasty are relatively well-preserved, providing important clues and physical evidence for the study and verification of the scope and location of the Liao Dynasty’s Xianling Mausoleum. These relics hold significant historical and archaeological value. It is a national-level key cultural relic protection unit.
