The season of autumn leaves is almost here. As a travel community platform, Fever Travel certainly wants to introduce some great spots for foliage viewing. Based on past experience, the first areas to see autumn colors are the high-altitude regions of Daisetsuzan National Park.It is expected that “reddening” will begin around mid-September, followed by lower-altitude areas gradually turning red. Daisetsuzan National Park consists of mountains such as Asahidake, Kitajindake, Shiroumadake, Kurodake, and Akadake.With an average elevation of about 2,000 meters, the leaves usually start turning red by the end of August, and by mid-September, the sweeping mountain landscapes ablaze with color are breathtaking.Visitors can also take a cable car to experience the grandeur of nature,enjoying the thrill of a stroll above the treetops.

Speaking of Daisetsuzan National Park, we must talk aboutSounkyo Gorgeand its history.It is said that Sounkyo was discovered by the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido during hunting.The name “Sounkyo” was given by the Taisho-era literary figure Takuboku Ishikawa, who said, “Climb Mt. Fuji to describe the height of a mountain. Climb Daisetsuzan to describe its vastness.”This shows just how expansive this area is.And when visiting
Sounkyo Gorge,you absolutely must not missGinseidan. This spot is not only one of the entrances to Daisetsuzan National Park,but also one of the earliest places in Japan where you can see autumn foliage each year. Ginseidan is located on the eastern side of Daisetsuzan National Park at an altitude of about 1,500 meters. If you choose to hike from here up to Akadake, it takes about three hours one way, and the journey offers delightful scenery as well as a gradual change in foliage color.
Prefer something a bit more relaxing? Taking the cable car up to Kurodake is your best bet. Here, you can ride the cable car up to the fifth station, roughly halfway up the mountain, saving you quite a bit of effort. From the cable car, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the valley filled with red leaves.
