Cycling Through Mountain Cliffs: Taitung’s “Jialan Skywalk” Opens

Taiwan has many skywalks, from horseshoe-shaped aerial paths jutting out over waterfalls to glass bridges that test visitors’ courage. The newly completed “Jialan Skywalk” in Jinfeng Township, Taitung, stands out for being built directly against the mountain cliffs. Not only does it provide more convenient access for local residents, but it also connects with the village’s cycling loop, becoming a new local landmark.

Jialan Village was devastated by Typhoon Morakot, with over 70 households destroyed. To revitalize the area and support reconstruction, the former Jinfeng Township magistrate Chang Cheng-hui planned and developed a 6.7-kilometer cycling loop around the village. This loop connects two new bridges in the village—Lawan and Lalenling—and features the cliff-hugging, suspended “Jialan Skywalk” in the middle, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the scenery of green mountains and clear waters. Taitung County Magistrate Huang Jian-ting also noted that the area will be adorned with fields of roselle flowers and red quinoa blossoms in the future, which is expected to make it one of Taiwan’s classic cycling routes while boosting local tourism.
