Where’s the cat-and-mouse game? A police dorm turned into a colorful attraction

Near Shuijiao She in South District, Tainan, there is a police-themed painted dormitory that uses "cat and mouse" as its storyline, becoming a new local attraction.

Chen Ruihua, head of Mingde Li in the area, said the project initially participated in the Environmental Protection Agency's Top-notch Plan organized by the South District Office of Tainan City. The concept came from the government, and the painting was executed by the Geng Yi Yun Workshop team. Huang Yajuan from the team designed the composition, and after discussions with the neighborhood head, they decided on a police-themed mural.

Chen Ruihua said the main focus was on police, so they created cute, cartoon-like images of police officers. The cat-and-mouse theme was used as the central narrative, with the cat representing the police. From setting up scaffolding, whitening the exterior walls, applying paint, creating mosaic collages, to installing iron sculpture artworks—all were made using eco-friendly materials. The entire project took over a month to complete.

The police dormitory is one of the residences within the Shuijiao She area, located near the old Deng beef noodle shop in the military dependents' village community, also known as Police New Village. Nearby, there is also a police heritage museum that offers storybooks. The first edition has already been published, and visitors are welcome to explore Police New Village.

Chen Ruihua also mentioned that since the village has a predominantly elderly population, this painting project involved the whole community. Everyone felt a sense of accomplishment from collectively transforming their neighborhood. The newly painted village now has a beautiful appearance, a completely renewed look, and a more youthful vibe—almost like turning back the clock.

Chen Ruihua added that the public can take bus route 18 and get off at Asia Hospitality School, or drive to the nearby free parking lot and walk to the police dormitory. In addition to the police dormitory, there are other nearby attractions such as the Shuijiao She Cultural Park, which features air force-themed sites.
