Winter hiking alert: New highlights on Maotou Mountain Trail – a hollow transparent sunshade viewing pavilion

Believe it or not, there’s a 650-meter-high mountain in Pingtung County where you can gaze at the Pacific Ocean to the east? It’s Maotou Mountain, located within Shuangliu National Forest Recreation Area. The newly renovatedMaotou Mountain Trail and the innovative sunshade viewing pavilion at the summitfeature a unique hollow transparent roof design, making this spot a new tourist highlight.

The Pingtung Forest District Office states that the Maotou Mountain Trail is the most challenging among the four trails in Shuangliu Recreation Area, rated three stars in difficulty. It sits at an elevation of about 650 meters, stretches approximately 2,630 meters in length, and involves an ascent of around 500 meters. From the summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of surrounding mountains and three bodies of water.From late September to early October each year, you can also witness the spectacular migration of the "National Day birds" (Grey-faced Buzzards) and Chinese Sparrowhawks in the morning.

Moreover, outdoor enthusiasts are reminded to watch out for hornets when entering mountain areas. Avoid wearing perfume, opt for light-colored clothing, and if you encounter bees, do not swat at them—stay calm, crouch low, and leave the area quickly.
