The purple crow butterfly overwintering season has arrived！ The Maolin Valley butterfly-watching event in Kaohsiung has officially begun.

In the valleys of Maolin District, Kaohsiung City, when winter arrives, tens of thousands of purple crow butterflies migrate south to overwinter. The swarming, fluttering butterflies create a breathtaking scene akin to a world-famous painting — this is also Asia’s only ecological wonder. Each year, these delicate visitors arrive.

This year, the Maolin National Scenic Area Administration has created large-scale educational play installations such as the "Butterfly Protection Flip Game" and "Purple Butterfly Pinball" to promote ecological education. Through interactive activities like nature walks and challenges, more visitors can learn about the ecology of the purple crow butterfly.

In collaboration with major tourism operators, the administration has launched one-day and two-day tour packages on the Sunshine Bus, inviting visitors from all over Taiwan to join them in Maolin, Kaohsiung, to spend winter with the purple crow butterflies. The butterfly-watching tour packages allow close-up views of the butterflies’ graceful dances and offer insight into their unique survival tactic of playing dead to evade predators — an experience rich in ecological education.

Starting November 11, the Maolin National Scenic Area Administration has launched a series of butterfly-watching activities. On weekends, shuttle bus services are available for visitors, along with a prediction event for the butterflies' arrival in the valley and their northward migration date, where participants can win iPads. There will also be 14 sessions of the Maolin Rukai Butterfly Protection Market, butterfly-watching picnic concerts, butterfly-loving companionship events, a northward migration relay closing ceremony, and various light-travel butterfly-watching tour packages. Taiwan High Speed Rail has also launched matching one-day and two-day holiday packages. Every Saturday and Sunday, together with the Purple Crow Butterfly Ecological Conservation Promotion Association of Maolin District, Kaohsiung City, events such as “Tagging Purple Crow Butterflies” ecological guided tours and “Environmental Conservation Education Classes” are held.
