Sun Moon Lake launches new electric boats; nighttime lake tours planned for the future

The Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration under the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation has launched new electric boats. The Ministry of Transportation stated that once conditions are ripe, nighttime navigation on Sun Moon Lake may be permitted, bringing a fresh look to the area.

The development of tourism at Sun Moon Lake has shown remarkable success, with visitor numbers soaring from 1.02 million to 8 million over the past eight years. In December 2015, Sun Moon Lake’s i3-Travel integrated electronic ticketing system, smart highway management, as well as electric vehicles, electric buses, cable cars, and electric boats, formed a comprehensive low-carbon tourism and smart sightseeing product. It was awarded the Gold Award in the Smart Transport category by the Energy Smart Communities Initiative hosted by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation.

In January this year (2016), Sun Moon Lake introduced four more electric boats, bringing the total number to 11. The Ministry of Transportation stated that developing electric boats is an essential plan for the sustainable future of Sun Moon Lake. This will be complemented by overall improvements to the docks and the introduction of a professional dock management company to create a highlight project for Sun Moon Lake. Moreover, when conditions are right, the possibility of opening up nighttime navigation on Sun Moon Lake will not be ruled out, aiming to present a new image for the area.
