Temperatures across Taiwan have been dropping sharply, and the Central Weather Bureau does not rule out the possibility of snowfall in Taipei’s Yangmingshan and Chiayi’s Alishan this weekend. The fan page “Alishan: Strolling Above the Clouds,” which has long documented the scenic beauty of Alishan throughout the seasons, shared on the 21st historical snow photos from the March snowfall in Alishan in 2005. The entire silver-white landscape has netizens hoping that this weekend might bring back such breathtaking scenery.

“Alishan: Strolling Above the Clouds” noted that the heavy snowfall began the night before and continued until the next morning, accumulating up to 30 cm of snow, blanketing Alishan in a snowy coat. The lakeside of the Sisters Ponds and wooden pavilions were covered in thick white snow, creating a scene so beautiful it remains unforgettable to this day — even though the snow caused the Alishan Forest Railway to take three days to resume service, and forest snow took ten days to melt away after heavy rain. That year also marked the worst season for Alishan’s floral blooms.

Many netizens are filled with anticipation for the predicted weekend snowfall. However, considering the low temperatures and potential snow, the Chiayi Forest District Office also reminds the public to check the weather and traffic conditions in mountainous areas via the Central Weather Bureau before traveling. In addition to packing warm clothing, if it does snow, vehicles should be equipped with snow chains to prevent slipping. Traffic control measures during snowfall are still pending announcement by the Highway Bureau.
