Seven Shades of Matcha Ice Cream in Asakusa, Tokyo – Challenge the “World’s Strongest Matcha”

Asakusa’s Kaminarimon has long been a popular attraction in Tokyo, and recently it has drawn many matcha enthusiasts making a special pilgrimage there. The renowned Shizuoka-based matcha dessert brand Nanaya has teamed up with the century-old tea house Suisen-en to launch seven shades of matcha Italian ice cream in Asakusa. The highest level, Grade 7, is claimed to be the “world’s strongest matcha.” Matcha lovers looking for a challenge should give it a try on their next trip to Tokyo.
In fact, Nanaya began offering seven shades of matcha Italian ice cream back in 2012 in Shizuoka, with clear distinctions among the seven levels of concentration:

Grade 1: Same concentration as regular matcha ice cream
Grade 2: Twice as concentrated as the regular level
Grades 3 & 4: Significantly stronger in flavor
Grade 5: The industry limit for Italian ice cream concentration
Grade 6: Beyond the limit
Grade 7: A level of concentration for those with courage (claimed to be the world’s strongest)
Starting in January 2016, Nanaya collaborated with the long-established tea house Suisen-en to begin selling the seven shades of matcha ice cream at Suisen-en’s Asakusa main store. From the opening day, long lines formed, prompting the shop to start issuing numbered tickets. According to netizens who have tried the highest grade, the taste is “incredibly intense,” with a “super matcha!” flavor that tempts even more people to take on the challenge.

Closed on the third Wednesday of each month; if that day is a national holiday, the store is closed on Thursday instead
