A night for under $500? Sleep on urban turf — Taichung’s new youth hostel opens

So—turns out there’s a new accommodation space near Minmin’s place that’s like a youth hostel. It’s not your typical compartmentalized dorm or bunk beds. The floor isn’t covered in fluffy carpet or tiled in wood or ceramic. It’s an open-concept space—decorated in a cute, playful style that makes you want to walk in and go “Wow!”

This adorable lodging spot is located in North District, Taichung—there aren’t any super nearby attractions (but buses are pretty convenient), so when Minmin first heard about this homestay opening, she was a bit skeptical. This time, coincidentally, a friend was staying there, so she got to check it out.

A large wooden door—it really stands out in this old neighborhood. There’s a digital lock at the bottom—you can punch in your own code to get in late after night market outings.

Push open the door—and the first-floor space displays lots of artworks. Guests currently staying here are also asked to leave behind a small piece of writing or drawing before they check out, becoming part of the ongoing exhibition.

Head up to the second floor—and take off your shoes at the entrance to prepare for a little surprise.

Isn’t it adorable? PerBed uses artificial turf instead of carpet and has built little tents on the turf—feels like stepping into a magical childhood playground.

There’s even a hammock setup like this—one that actually sways when you sit on it. Super unique, right?! But I wonder if rolling over in the middle of the night might make you feel dizzy from the “bed”! Also, there are power outlets designed right under the beds—pretty thoughtful.

There’s also the option of a princess-style iron bed like this. When you come here—everyone just picks their favorite bed. The staff provides blankets—the beds have fitted sheets you can wrap the blankets in, and according to my friend, the staff comes by in the morning to collect the sheets.

There are also simple beds by the window you can choose. That said, sleeping here might feel a bit insecure because you’re facing passing cars and pedestrians—haha, guys probably won’t mind though.

On the other side of the window area, there are simple tables and throw pillows—friends who come together can sit here for snacks and chats. But since it’s an open space—there are rules against bringing strongly scented food, and you should keep your voice down while chatting.

The safety window signs are super cute—yeah, seriously don’t open them randomly.

This area even has faux starry skies. The big painted moon is super pretty.

Current pricing is 499 NTD per night—a very affordable rate.(Free for the first four reservations daily until the end of April, promotional period.)It’s a simple lodging space—but still offers bathrooms and water dispensers. Nearby, there are convenience stores, a movie theater, and tons of fried chicken cutlets… hehe.

PerBed doesn’t serve breakfast, but you can take bus 100 to Sanmin Jinchung Intersection to try Yixin Egg Pancakes, or go straight to Yizhong Street where there are plenty of breakfast food trucks to choose from. You can also walk to Beitun Market for some traditional eats.

The location is a bit off the bustling areas—but just bus 100 can get you to many places, like Fengyuan Miaodong Night Market and Asia University’s European-style campus (though the open space means you might be affected by others—it might be hard to sleep if you need it very quiet). Friends visiting Taichung next time can also try a bit of urban camping here.
