Aside from Okinawa, the waters of Hokkaido also have a unique hue. The “Shakotan Peninsula,” which can be reached by driving west along the coast from Otaru for about an hour, is a favorite summer vacation spot for locals. The sea here has a distinctive color, known as “Shakotan Blue,” and is considered the most beautiful ocean color in the eyes of the locals.

Located in the northwest of Otaru City, Shakotan stretches for approximately several kilometers. With its uniquely rugged coastline and steep cliffs, it is ranked as one of Hokkaido’s scenic wonders. As a result, the Shakotan Peninsula has been designated by the Japanese government as part of the Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan National Park. The Hokkaido Tourism Promotion Association recommends visiting Shakotan for its exceptionally beautiful sea colors, which locals call “Shakotan Blue.” It is also known as a hidden gem due to its previously limited accessibility.
