Only one house number apart but 3km away！Kenting’s new attraction “Mail Delivery Tour” boasts breathtaking scenery

Remember the scene in the movie "Cape No. 7" where the postman delivers mail? Now, a real-life “mail delivery” experience has emerged in Yongjing Community, Manzhou Township, Pingtung.Due to its geographical location, walking from No. 42 to No. 43 on Yongnan Road requires a trek of over 3 kilometers.The winding uphill climb is physically demanding, but it offers views rarely seen by travelers to Kenting. As a result, the local community has planned the “Uncle Maobó Mail Delivery Tour,” guiding visitors along the postman’s route to enjoy paradisiacal landscapes.

In Yongjing Community, Manzhou Township, Pingtung CountyThe “Buddy Shooting Mali – Cape Mail Delivery Tour” takes advantage of the small hill separating No. 42 and No. 43 on Yongnan Road, having tourists follow in the postman’s footsteps up the slopes of Yongjing.The hilltop is surrounded by lush green grass, with cattle and sheep occasionally passing by. Along the walk, visitors can learn about local plants and climb to enjoy a panoramic view of Yongjing Community nestled among the mountains. Community members specially dressed as “guides” wear postal uniforms, making the journey feel like an authentic mail delivery—like stepping into the world of "Cape No. 7."

In recent years, eight communities in Kenting have promoted eco-tourism with notable success, and Yongjing Community is the latest to join. For the “Uncle Maobó Mail Delivery Tour,” the community has trained around 20 guides, who attend weekly classes and exams to learn about flora and fauna, ecological conservation, and guiding skills. During the trial tour, local resident Zhou Wenxian served as the guide. Though his custom-made postal uniform wasn’t ready yet, he sported a postman’s hat and energetically held a briefing board, ready to set off.

The full 3-kilometer route takes approximately two and a half hours. Starting at No. 42 on Yongnan Road, visitors receive a special postcard made by Yongjing Community and set off toward No. 43 to deliver it. Historically, sisal was a major cash crop in the Hengchun area, accounting for 80% of Taiwan’s total production. Between No. 42 and No. 43, there used to be a small railway for transporting sisal, but over time, the tracks disappeared. However, the memories of playing by the tracks remain vivid for locals.

Zhou Wenxian is a “new immigrant” to Kenting. Drawn by the area’s beautiful mountains and waters, he retired and moved to Kenting with his family to open a homestay. Although not a local by birth, Zhou said that as a community resident, he wants to better understand the land. “I try my best to explain things and hope everyone can offer pointers.” He pointed to a dip in the green grass nearby known as the “cow pit,” saying that after sisal cultivation ended, the landscape changed, and water buffalo are now often seen roaming. “This depression is their bathtub.”

“I used to play in this pool a lot too.” Other trained guides from the community joined Zhou Wenxian on the tour, and the group sat by the cow pit pool, enjoying the sun filtering through the grass. Wild guava trees, locally grown softshell turtles, plants like the seaside morning glory that attract Ryukyu oakblue butterflies, and mountain-crossing fragrant herbs thrive here, blanketing the hillside in vibrant green.

Following Zhou Wenxian’s lead, after another hour and a half of walking, the group reaches the hilltop. From the summit, there are sweeping views of Menmalo Mountain, Laofoshan Mountain, and the surrounding village, offering an expansive panorama.Community residents pulled out their own water bottles, sat atop the hill, and began singing Manzhou folk songs. The soft melodies carried lightly on the wind, one song after another, telling of the idyllic beauty of Manzhou Township, all set against a backdrop of endless green. This view rivals any natural wonder in the world.

After climbing over the hill and walking further, you’ll reach the doorstep of No. 43—a modest local home. The elderly resident said she was happy to see eco-tourism initiatives, “but I’m worried that when visitors get here, there might not be enough water. We can only collect rainwater, so we can’t offer tea.” A mailbox is placed at the door of No. 43, where visitors can drop the postcards they’ve carried since No. 42, symbolizing the “completion of the mail delivery.”

In addition to the Uncle Maobó Mail Delivery Tour, Yongjing Community also offers specialty meals. The menu changes seasonally and features local Hengchun specialties such as cold jellyfish salad, tuna with knife fish, onion tuna slices, egg-fried deer antler vegetable, braised pork, stir-fried rain mushroom omelet, and homegrown vegetables. Reservations are available for groups of 10 or more at NT$250 per person, enjoying a lavish spread of 8 dishes and 1 soup.
