Dare to give it a try? The “Bailong Elevator” within the Wulingyuan Scenic Area of Zhangjiajie, Hunan,has a vertical height difference of 335 meters, an operating height of 326 meters, and consists of a 154-meter vertical shaft inside the mountain and a 172-meter steel-framed structure built against the mountain cliff,and currently holds a Guinness World Record as the “highest outdoor elevator.”

Construction on the Bailong Elevator began in September 1999 and was completed in April 2002, entering trial operation. The main equipment of the elevator was developed and produced by Germany’s Rangger International Elevator Company, with a total investment of 180 million RMB. Itfeatures three double-decker, fully exposed sightseeing elevators running side by side. Starting in May 2013, the three elevators were upgraded in batches, increasing the maximum operating speed from 3 meters per second to 5 meters per second. This reduced the one-way trip time from 1 minute 58 seconds to 1 minute 32 seconds, and the total hourly passenger capacity increased to approximately 6,000 people.。

The Bailong Elevator is an important stop along the golden route of the core Wulingyuan Scenic Area, connecting various attractions within Zhangjiajie National Forest Park such as Tianzi Mountain, Yuanjiajie, and Golden Whip Stream. According to statistics, since the completion of all three elevator upgrades, the Bailong Elevator has welcomed over 2.1 million visitors.
