Bravo Caffè: A café full of love and courage.

Before going abroad, I took some time to visit Bravo Caffè, and that’s when I discovered this takeout coffee shop near Da’an Station — a place I often frequented. Here, I witnessed the love between a couple and the courage of hearing-impaired individuals starting their own business.

The location is right across from Da’an Institute of Technology, just a few minutes’ walk from Exit 5 of Da’an Station. It takes real courage to open a shop in such an expensive area.

I met the owner at a new book sharing event for coffee professionals, so I already knew before visiting that the owner is hearing-impaired. After greeting him, I simply pointed to the coffee I wanted on the menu. Even if you’re just getting takeout, you can order this way.

The owner, Luo Jianqiang, is a national deaf basketball player who has even led teams to international competitions. Beyond basketball, he’s also talented, having previously worked in copywriting and design at advertising agencies and TV stations.

Interior style: The interior — including the coffee machine, the roaster, and the logo wall — features yellow as the main color. When I asked the owner why yellow, he gave a simple answer: he loves yellow (he even pointed to the yellow on his shoes). The shop was designed by him, who graduated from a fine arts department, and it also displays many of his toy collections. There’s also a series of sign language paintings on the walls that you can learn from — I learned how to sign “good morning,” “coffee,” and “delicious” there on the spot.

Coffee offerings: Espresso, single-origin coffee, and some non-coffee drinks. Prices here are actually quite reasonable for the area. When buying roasted beans, each pack even comes with what they call a “golden cudgel” — very thoughtful.

Coffee equipment: La Marzocco FB80 espresso machine, Mahlkoenig K30 grinder. Single-origin coffee is brewed using a clever dripper. There's also a one-kilo semi-hot-air roaster. Stop by for a takeout cup before work on Monday.

Coffee made with heart — no need for sign language. Coffee is our common language.
