It feels like being in the Milky Way — a Chiayi camping site with a forest of glowing fireflies!

Camping is a one-way road, you once told me with a laugh. This time, we’ve returned to that campsite filled with smiling faces. The light filtering through the trees beside the tent brings back memories of when we talked about our love for camping dreams. What about you? Do you have a beautiful camping dream too? Imagine if there were sea of clouds — wouldn’t it be like crystal lights everywhere (a winter rainy day bonus).

Let’s see how to get to the Rilijiahe Campsite:

Take National Highway 3 South to Meishan Interchange:

Head toward Meishan, then make a left turn.

Turn left toward Meishan Township Office.

After about 300 meters, turn right onto County Road 149.

After driving about 300 meters, you’ll see the junction of County Road 149 and County Road 162甲 — go straight.

Starting point of County Road 162甲.

Road signs are very clear — keep your eyes peeled, haha XD.

Passes through Taiping’s 36 Curves (it’s actually not far, not hard to drive).

County Road 162甲, Ruifeng Village — almost there.

Easy to spot, right? At the 35.3 km mark on County Road 162甲, make a big U-turn into the campsite.

Drive up from here.

The mosaic wall decals made by the campsite owner couple welcome campers at the entrance lol.

First, head to the camp office to check in and reserve your spot.

Newly built restroom facilities (a total of X5 bathrooms) next to the camp office.

This expansion added five bathrooms all at once.

Men’s bathroom (comes with cleaning supplies).

Squat toilet (comes with cleaning supplies).

The bathroom is covered in cute mosaic murals— the women’s toilet was also tiled by hand.

Each one is very clean and tidy.

Solar water heater, dedicated for the homestay.

Let’s first introduce the covered campsite B area next to the camp office.

The ground is very flat gravel, cleanliness is a perfect 100, with toilets nearby— a very convenient area.

The iron poles all have power outlets for easy access.

One sink.

Now let’s take a look at the lower-level campsites of the scenic viewing platform area.

Beautiful distant mountain views, absolutely gorgeous.

Unloading gear is also very convenient, right next to the campsite.

Left side of the platform, can accommodate two tents and one living tent.

Comes with a row of seating.

Dedicated sink X1, power outlet is next to the light.

Right side of the lower-level campsite platform also has beautiful distant mountain scenery.

But this area can only fit one tent and one living tent or two small tents.

Comes with seating (stag beetle mosaic design).

Couldn’t do any night stargazing, arriving early still allowed us to catch some blue sky.

The scenic viewing platform has several cement blocks for securing tents— very thoughtful.

Honestly, it’s been a very long time since I last shot the starry sky, really nostalgic.

With nothing much to do at night, could only take photos of the tents.

I tried my luck at 4:30 in the morning, but tonight was fully booked again.

Now let me introduce Area A.

Walk up the small path next to the camp headquarters, and you’ll reach Area A.

Area A is a newly added section from last year.

It’s also one of the larger sections of the campsite, perfect for small group camping.

You can also enjoy a bit of mountain view from here.

There are multiple sinks.

All the safe power outlets are located under the sinks.

This area, including the tarp area, can accommodate about 5–6 tents max.

Night photos in Area A — the later it gets, the livelier it becomes.

Each tent comes with a handmade weaving DIY kit. Camp manager Miss Shen will guide you carefully on how to weave. (For additional people, there's only a material fee of 30 NT$.)

Finally, let’s take a look at the upper-level campsites.

There’s a small garden in front.

The upper-level campsites offer beautiful distant views.

This popular area — I guess it really is hard to book a spot, huh?

The restrooms are also located near this area.

That’s the general overview of the upper level.

There are several sinks.

Each section has an elevation change, so the views are more scenic.

There are fairly flat camping spots where you can set up around three tents.

At the far end corner, there’s space for one more tent.

Go up a bit for a clearer shot.

The front of each campsite has steps leading up to the platform area.

A really fantastic section.

The upper and middle-level campsites offer excellent photo angles (the shooting spot is the tea plantation at the very top).

And finally, the restroom area.

Actually, the campsite has as many as 9 bathrooms, but they only accommodate 16–18 tents.

Men's restroom features distinctive bathroom facilities.

Hairdryer available.

Women's restroom has a cute hallway.

Sit-down toilets + squat toilets (kept clean at all times).

This time we came to the Rili Fenghe Campsite just to redeem ourselves from last year’s fail (last year’s photo XD).

Pre-trip preparation is crucial—the first step is scouting the firefly habitat.

Over this past year, I’ve often thought about that failed shot, and I really can’t let it go.

Walking down the trail, we passed through the tea plantation area.

So lucky to have come across this scene.

After walking for about ten minutes, we finally reached the tea plantation where we’d shoot the fireflies.

Took a short break here. Since the firefly-shooting spot is on private land, there’s a 50 NT cleaning fee.

Only happens once a year, not many people come—great deal for photography lovers (entry point ahead).

Punctually at 6 PM, waiting—and around 7 PM, the fireflies hit their peak.

Due to heavy light pollution in the background, a black card is needed.

My buddy’s GF6 didn’t let me down: F1.7, S60, ISO1250, black card.

There were literally tens of thousands of fireflies right in front of us—it was truly moving.

1: There is currently a free firefly viewing area near the campsite. To see more, paid viewing is required (on private land).
2: The campsite has limited parking. Campers reserving entire areas or adding tents must inform the campsite owner in advance (camping etiquette notice).
