To promote tourism, business, and people-to-people exchanges between the Philippines and Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will trial a 14-day visa-free entry policy for Filipino nationals visiting Taiwan. To expand the ASEAN tourism market, the Taipei City Government has participated in travel expos in Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia this year. In the Philippine market, in addition to making its first appearance in Manila this year at the Taiwan Tourism Promotion Fair and Travel Expo, it has recently collaborated with the popular blog Our Awesome Planet, founded by well-known Filipino food critic Anton Diaz, to produce a FUN TAIPEI Taipei experience travel promotional video. This aims to spark the desire of Filipinos to visit Taipei even before the visa exemption takes effect, so they can fulfill their wishes as soon as it is implemented!

Tourism and Communications Bureau Director Jane Yuyan stated that the Philippines has a sizable middle class with high travel demand, and the flight duration between the two places is only 2 hours with no time difference. Coupled with Taipei’s rich and diverse tourism resources and shopping environment, which are highly attractive, especially its cuisine, which is the top target that excites and motivates Filipino people. Once the complicated visa procedures are eliminated, it will be more convenient and affordable for Filipino travelers than domestic travel.According to statistics released by the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation, the number of Filipino visitors to Taiwan from January to August this year was 181,850, an increase of 71% compared to last year’s 106,118, showing very promising prospects.“Taiwan is a fresh and promising travel destination for the Philippine tourism market, with great market potential. We believe that with Taipei’s tourism strength, visa exemption will further stimulate the willingness of more Filipinos to visit.”

This year, the Tourism and Communications Bureau has targeted the ASEAN market not only through cooperation with airlines and travel agencies and cross-industry alliances but also by producing promotional materials in local languages and Muslim-specific travel guides. It has also participated in local tourism promotion fairs or travel expos, invited media and travel agency professionals from Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam to explore the city, and organized matchmaking events with local Taipei tourism operators. The bureau has not taken the emerging Filipino market lightly either. When it attended the Travel Madness Expo in the Philippines in July this year, it directly engaged with locals to understand market needs. Filipinos who have traveled to Taipei were very enthusiastic, praising the city’s cleanliness, convenient public transportation, good security, and affordable shopping. “We really want to come back again and again!” Many more are eager to know when the visa exemption will begin, ready to visit Taipei for its food and shopping spree as soon as it’s available!
