Apart from entertainment, the Ruins of St. Paul’s, and milk custard, visitors to Macau will now be able to admire the graceful sight of over a hundred butterfly species fluttering about. The first-ever large-scale butterfly ecology exhibition in Macau, “Flutter of Butterflies at MGM MACAU,” will kick off in May. At the heart of the event is the “Flutter of Butterflies Pavilion” located in the center of the Sky Dome Plaza. Inside, 60 iPads showcase the mesmerizing dance of butterflies, while large-scale butterfly installation art offers visitors a vibrant and luxurious visual experience.

This “Flutter of Butterflies at MGM MACAU” exhibition consists of multiple installation artworks. Among them, the “Flutter of Butterflies Pavilion” in the center of the Sky Dome Plaza has a diameter of about 8 meters and a height of approximately 6.4 meters. Its exterior design is inspired by the geodesic dome structures created by the late American architect Buckminster Fuller, known as the father of the geodesic dome. Inside the pavilion, 60 iPads project dreamlike visual effects through artistic imagery of butterflies in flight. Surrounding the pavilion are three massive windmill steel trees, each weighing about 1.3 tons and crafted from 16 kilometers of steel wire. Hundreds of delicate, small windmills on the trees gently rotate amid a beautiful scene of flowers and butterflies. This is accompanied by the light and shadow changes of the central water orbs and the gentle sound of flowing water, creating a spectacle that captivates the eye.

The exhibition runs from May to October. During this period, visitors can observe the butterfly emergence process in the butterfly eclosion room, witnessing the wondrous moment when butterflies break out of their cocoons. They can also exchange knowledge and insights about butterflies with Dr. Wu Yun, a butterfly expert. Additionally, by looking up at the gracefully curving white benches in the Sky Dome Plaza, one can see giant decorations of monarch butterflies, birdwing butterflies, and paradise butterflies seemingly fluttering across the plaza. Their translucent bodies shimmer against the vibrant colors of the “Flutter of Butterflies Pavilion,” glittering brilliantly under the sunlight.
