Behind-the-Scenes of "Life of Pi" to Be Exhibited at Taichung National Museum of Natural Science Starting Now

The latest work directed by award-winning director Ang Lee, "Life of Pi," is less than a month away from its release. The National Museum of Natural Science, the Taichung City Government, and 20th Century Fox Film Corporation have jointly launched the "Life of Pi Special Exhibition" at the entrance hall of the museum's 3D Theater starting today. The exhibition will not only feature never-before-seen exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, illustrations from the original novel, and a variety of survival tools from the film, but also include a real-life simulation of drifting at sea and interactive games, taking visitors into the fantastical world of the movie.

The "Life of Pi Special Exhibition" runs from now until February 24 next year and is divided into three major sections. After walking through a deep-sea tunnel teeming with swimming fish, visitors will be greeted by a realistic depiction of the drifting island from the film, complete with a dynamic Bengal tiger sculpture that looks incredibly lifelike. Next, through behind-the-scenes footage being shown in Taiwan for the first time, audiences will see interviews with Director Ang Lee and introductions to the crew, gaining insight into the creative process behind this 3D fantasy film. As the captivating storyline unfolds, visitors will encounter the soulmates who drifted at sea for nearly 100 days—the young protagonist "Pi" and a Bengal tiger named "Richard Parker."

 

To allow visitors to experience the protagonist’s adventurous journey of survival at sea, the exhibition displays a variety of survival equipment featured in the film, as well as a "Life-Saving Equipment Display Chart" painted by Croatian freelance illustrator Tomislav Torjanac on a wooden boat. Visitors can even try on life jackets and use sound devices to learn survival skills, mastering the top 10 rules of survival at sea. This helps them understand how Pi and the tiger overcame numerous challenges to survive, while also learning practical survival knowledge.

Additionally, the "Magical Animal Companions on the Journey" exhibition area, provided by the National Geographic Channel, showcases the various animals and natural wonders Pi encounters during his fantastical journey. In this section, visitors can view rare and beautiful animals from nature, including the mysterious and adorable foxes, fierce tigers, jellyfish in the ocean, and magnificent blue whales, through captivating ecological documentary footage. The final exhibition area is the highly popular interactive game zone. Designed like a Monopoly-style game, visitors can play and progress through each level with ease, and receive a commemorative stamp upon reaching the final station.

 

Though filming locations spanned three continents, most scenes of "Life of Pi" were shot in Taichung’s Waishuangxi Economic and Trade Zone in Taiwan. This 3D epic fantasy masterpiece is adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by global best-selling author Yann Martel. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Ang Lee, the film tells the story of a young boy who survives a shipwreck and spends 227 days drifting at sea, overcoming adversity and finding rebirth. The surreal maritime adventure and the complex bond between the boy and the Bengal tiger touch the heart through the lens. Since its prologue was unveiled at the New York Film Festival, the film has received widespread acclaim from professional media and critics around the world, with Time magazine even comparing it to a second "Avatar."
