The Traditional Opera Art Festival, organized annually by Miaoli County Government and featuring performances by renowned traditional drama troupes, has garnered widespread acclaim among local residents. This year’s “Emotions of the Mountain City, Art of Happiness—2013 Traditional Opera Art Festival” will run from now until April 28, featuring 10 high-quality traditional theater troupes from both sides of the Taiwan Strait. They will perform 20 spectacular opera shows across 18 townships and cities in succession.

The 10 groups invited to this event include Mainland China’s Yongding Hakka Tulou Art Troupe, Minghua Garden Drama Troupe, Rongxing Hakka Tea-picking Opera Troupe, Wenhe Legend Drama Troupe, Mingzhu Women’s Opera Troupe, Yixin Drama Troupe, Huayi Drama Troupe, Jinmanyuan Drama Troupe, Qingmei Garden Drama Troupe, and the Chen Family Eight-Tone Troupe. Their performance styles vary widely, covering genres such as Hakka Eight-Tone Music, Hakka Tea-picking Opera, and Gezaixi (Taiwanese Opera), all of which will be showcased at the festival. This weekend’s performances include the Chen Family Troupe’s Beiguan Eight-Tone Troupe presenting “Melodious Hakka Sounds – A Mini Eight-Tone Opera” at 3:00 PM on March 1 at the Qing’an Parking Lot in Tai’an Township, and the Huayi Drama Troupe’s “Gradually the Mortal World” at 7:30 PM on March 3 at the River-Covered Plaza in Sanyi Township.
Miaoli County Government stated that due to rapid technological development and the emergence of media platforms, the entertainment preferences of the general public have also evolved. Traditional opera, once a symbol of grassroots culture, has moved from temple entrances in daily life to formal performance halls. The “2013 Traditional Opera Art Festival” aims to help opera take root in every township and city within the county. By inviting the Yongding Hakka Tulou Art Troupe from Mainland China to perform and engage in cultural exchange, the festival hopes to breathe new life into traditional opera.
