The National Palace Museum is hosting the "A New Era of Collections – Exhibition of Masterpieces of Modern and Contemporary Calligraphy and Paintings" from now until April 30 in Exhibition Rooms 105 and 107 of the Main Building. The exhibition features works by artists from the Beijing-Tianjin area during the modern and contemporary periods—a time when China was transitioning from imperial rule to democracy, and the arts and culture flourished with vitality. The exhibited artworks are diverse and rich in content, vividly reflecting the trajectory of historical changes and serving as a microcosm of the evolving years of the Republic of China.

The calligraphy and paintings in the National Palace Museum’s collection were inherited from the Qing imperial household and represent the finest works accumulated by successive dynasties, noted for their exceptional quality. After the relocation of the museum’s artifacts to Taiwan along with the Nationalist government in 1949 (the 38th year of the Republic of China), the collection has continued to expand. In addition to actively acquiring and soliciting calligraphy and painting works, the museum has also received donations from members of the public, collectors, and various institutions. Over the decades, more than 6,000 new pieces of calligraphy and paintings have been added to the collection. These newly acquired works include former Qing palace treasures that had been scattered among the public, late Ming loyalist works that were previously underrepresented in the museum’s holdings, as well as 19th- and 20th-century paintings and calligraphies that the museum was eager to expand.
