The French take pride not only in their cuisine but also in their elegant lifestyle and refined taste. The Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts is hosting the exhibition "The Art of Dining: French Table Art Design" from now until April 28, which combines French luxury and fashion design, presenting an "à la française" atmosphere that merges sophistication with practical comfort through table settings. Ten dining tables in different color schemes are paired with ten distinct tableware styles suited for various times and occasions — from brunch and picnics to formal dinners, and from literary charm and ethnic styles to classic French flair — vividly demonstrating the impressive and captivating dining culture of contemporary France.

The "The Art of Dining: French Table Art Design" exhibition at Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts features tableware from 23 top French home decor and tableware brands, created by 38 veteran and emerging designers. Time-honored classics such as Baccarat crystal ware, Bernardaud porcelain, Christofle silverware, Saint-Louis glassware, and Hermès tableware, with heritage of over a century, continue to refine their craftsmanship and remain symbols of high living standards in the new century. Meanwhile, emerging lifestyle design studios such as Pied de Poule, Tsé & Tsé Associés, and Le Magasin – Centre National d'Art Contemporain de Grenoble, have garnered fans worldwide with their innovative materials, humorous concepts, and exceptional quality.
Xie Peini, director of Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, stated that when people encounter beautiful aspects of French culture, art, and design and find it hard to describe their appeal, they often exclaim with admiration using the word “French.” From the 10 exquisitely designed table setting works on display, one can also see how precisely, delicately, and aptly the designers have grasped aesthetic expression. The exhibition also showcases how France uses its deep cultural roots as a universal language, extending its cultural foundation globally, growing boundlessly, and earning its reputation as a “cultural powerhouse.”
Elisabeth Couturier, the curator of this exhibition, shared that the designs of French luxury brand products are all created to meet practical needs in daily life, and table art design touches on various aspects of everyday routines, including hospitality and etiquette. This exhibition has also introduced some new designers, incorporating fresh design concepts and playful elements, making the overall presentation more diverse and vibrant.
