With increasing international travel and exchanges, more Muslims are visiting Taiwan. To capture the hearts of the hottest Muslim market travelers globally, the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications commissioned the Chinese Muslim Association to actively guide domestic restaurants and hotel industries in improving their reception environments and obtaining relevant certification labels. Since last September, a six-month guidance and evaluation period was launched, resulting in the certification of 16 food and beverage establishments across seven counties and cities in Taiwan. This includes the first two restaurants at Taiwan’s gateway, Taoyuan Airport, receiving certification, as well as three five-star hotels such as the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Farglory Hotel - Shenkeng Branch also making the list.

The Tourism Bureau and the Chinese Muslim Association issued the “Halal Catering Certification” label and the “Muslim Friendly Restaurant Certification” label for food and hospitality businesses operated by both Muslim and non-Muslim owners. The 16 certified restaurants are spread across seven counties and cities in Taiwan, including Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan County, Taichung City, Tainan City, Hualien County, and Taitung County. In addition to one Muslim-friendly restaurant each in the departure area and food court of Taoyuan International Airport, certified establishments also include the five-star Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Farglory Hotel - Shenkeng Branch, Tainan’s Grand Formosa Regent Hotel, and Taitung’s Naluwan Hotel, showing that Taiwan’s tourism and hospitality industry is gradually understanding the Muslim traveler market, with tourism environments becoming more international.

Due to the uniqueness and special regulations of the Muslim market, the Muslim world avoids pork, and seafood, chicken, duck, and beef must undergo special blood-draining processes and be recited over with the Quran before they can be consumed. Du Yuji, Vice President of Farglory Hotel Shenkeng Branch—which has received certification—said: “Farglory Hotel Shenkeng Branch ensures all ingredients, sources, and suppliers are Muslim-approved. All ingredients and sauces on the menu have been developed under the recognition of Muslim organizations.”
