Previously, we shared with netizens the world’s best city to live in, which was Melbourne winning the title for the third time. Today, we’re introducing the world’s best city for sightseeing, based on an online poll conducted by Travel & Leisure magazine published by American Express Publishing. Bangkok has been selected as the 2013 World’s Best City for Sightseeing, while Chiang Mai, the largest city in northern Thailand, ranked tenth. Among Asian cities, Bangkok came in first, and Chiang Mai ranked third.

Bangkok scored a total of 90.4 points, beating out second-place Istanbul, Turkey, and third-place Florence, Italy. Cape Town, South Africa, and Kyoto, Japan, took fourth and fifth places, respectively. Rounding out the sixth to tenth spots were Rome, Italy; Charleston, USA; Barcelona, Spain;,Paris, France; and Chiang Mai, Thailand. In this category of global tourism rankings, Bangkok has made the top ranks for the third consecutive year.
MasterCard, in its 2013 Guide to the World’s Top 20 Destinations for Holidays, ranked Bangkok as the world’s best holiday city based on international visitor arrivals. This marks the first time an Asian city has claimed the top spot since the travel guide was first published in 2010.
TripAdvisor ranked Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, as the number one among Asia’s 25 Top Destinations for Travellers, while Chiang Mai came in sixth. Additionally, in the list of the World’s Best Island Destinations for Holidays, Koh Samui ranked ninth and Phuket ranked fifteenth. Among Asian island destinations, Koh Samui came in fourth and Phuket ranked fifth.
