If you want to get to know a city, the easiest way is to make friends with the locals. Located in Neukölln, Berlin’s district with the highest immigrant population, Plus One Berlin was born in March last year from this very concept by the Spamroom studio.

Simply called P1B, Plus One Berlin has only one room, and the space is just 9 pyeong (approximately 30 square meters) in size. It’s like a rental apartment but fully embodies the simple, practical, yet warm and cozy spirit of the Germanic people. The interior furnishings—from the bed, wardrobe, mini kitchen, to the desk—are like modular blocks. Variously sized and rectangular shapes create excellent storage functionality. For example, three movable cabinets pulled out from under the bed become instant seating, while all the cabinets together form a simple extra bed for a third person. The main cabinet in the corner can serve as a wardrobe, storage unit, or even a place to store spices when cooking. Every item you see here was handpicked by the Spamroom studio from a large pool of second-hand discarded furniture and then assembled. Different types of wood, grain patterns, and faintly retained paint colors create a unique design aesthetic. The Spamroom studio says that although this process takes more time than using new furniture, it results in a completely different and one-of-a-kind personality. Therefore, items such as the gas pipe lighting fixtures or nostalgic-looking hangers are all handmade.
