A stunning library created from an old train factory – a new benchmark for urban reading spaces

LocHal Library is located in Tilburg in the southeastern part of the Netherlands, right next to Tilburg Railway Station. It was built from the former train factory of the Dutch National Railways. Unlike a typical library, it functions more like a large public space where people can read, study, work, perform, relax, and even create new spaces.
The original high-ceilinged space is paired with large stepped seating.
Under the framework of the old train factory, the space has been planned in a very lively way. In addition to the central Brabant Library, there are also a city café, Kunstloc Brabant (focused on art and cultural activities), Seats2Meet (offering Wi-Fi, AV resources, and meeting spaces), and Brabant C (an arts and culture foundation).
The city café is a great spot to sit down with a cup of coffee and enjoy this vibrant space.
Within this multifunctional space, diverse zones paired with playful interior designs and well-equipped facilities make it suitable for reading, collaboration, discussion, or meetings. Each area also has just the right atmosphere.
The open indoor spaces and moderate greenery create a pleasant environment for both mind and body.
In terms of interior design, unique historical elements are perfectly combined with newly added steel structures and oak wood. The warm color palette and bright, colorful interiors give the whole space a playful and fresh feel – a reading environment that is anything but heavy.
