The environment around hiking trails in Taipei City has been gradually improved over the years, leading to an increasing number of fireflies. The best time to view them is around 18:30 to 20:00 from late April to late May. The Department of Urban Development’s Geotechnical Engineering Office of the Taipei City Government recommends five leisurely firefly-watching trails. As the spring breeze gently brushes through the mountains and forests of Taipei, fireflies will twinkle like little stars, dancing through the spring light, wielding their own brushes to paint a breathtaking picture with life as their color palette. The public is welcome to stroll along these mountain trails, watch the twinkling firefly lights, feel the vitality of life, and ignite the flame of hope within.

Huang Liyuan, head of the Geotechnical Engineering Office, said that the “Cui Shan Trail” in Shilin District was originally an abandoned police shooting range, featuring rich and diverse natural landscapes. Thanks to vegetation restoration efforts by the office, the trail is now home to “Luciola kagiana” fireflies fluttering and playing along the way. Meanwhile, the “Dagou Stream Riverside Trail” in Neihu District, located near the clean waters of Dagou Stream, provides a suitable habitat for fireflies to live and breed. By the stream, you can admire fluttering butterflies during the day and observe firefly activity at night.

Xia Xiantong, head of the Roads and Trails Section at the Geotechnical Engineering Office, said that the “Shuiche Liao Trail” in Beitou District is gentle and comfortable, and extends deep into the sea anemone fields. During the day, you can easily enjoy the embrace of pure white sea anemone seas, and at night, you can stroll among the starlight and fireflies, watching them shuttle back and forth through the sea anemones. The flickering firefly lights shine on the sea anemone flowers, which respond with their pure white smiles, revealing a rarely seen sight.

Wang Shanjuan from the Chinese Taipei Nature Trails Association said that the “Tiger Mountain Nature Trail” in Xinyi District, located near Tiger Mountain Stream—whose waters have been ecologically restored by the Geotechnical Engineering Office to be clear and rich in biodiversity—is often graced by fireflies dancing along the hillsides. In addition, the “Guihua Suspension Bridge Trail” in Nangang District, with its rich ecology and fewer outside visitors, also offers sightings of fireflies flying about during early summer nights.
