Beitou Library is simply enchanting – ranked among CNN’s “27 Most Beautiful Libraries in the World”

The Beitou Branch of the Taipei Public Library, previously chosen by U.S. entertainment website Flavorwire.com as one of the world’s 25 most beautiful libraries, has now received praise from CNN Travel, being named one of the “27 Most Beautiful Libraries in the World.” The article highlighted the treehouse-like design of the library’s exterior, as well as its green building and eco-friendly concepts. The Beitou Branch is also one of only two Asian libraries—alongside the Shanghai Library—to be selected in this round of the ranking.

Located within Beitou Park, the Beitou Branch of the Taipei Public Library is Taiwan’s first green building library. Its construction materials are recyclable, the interior uses eco-friendly paints, and features such as wooden lattice screens and deep overhangs on balconies help reduce heat radiation entering the building, thus achieving energy-saving and carbon-reduction goals. Additionally, the CNN Travel feature specifically pointed out the sloped, grass-covered roof equipped with solar panels that not only generate electricity but also retain moisture and channel rainwater into recycling tanks for irrigating the library’s plants and flushing toilets.

 

The Beitou Branch of the Taipei Public Library has won numerous awards, including the Ministry of the Interior’s Green Building Nine Major Indicators Candidate Certificate, the Green Building Diamond-Level Certification, the 2007 National Excellence in Construction Award – Excellence Award, finalist in the 6th Far Eastern Outstanding Architectural Design Award, the 2007 Taiwan Architecture Award Grand Prize, and the 2008 Global Architecture Gold Award – Global Excellence in Construction Award Finalist.
