On July 6, Yuan Zai turned one year old!
As Taiwan’s first locally born giant panda, every move of Yuan Zai has been closely watched by the public. The Taipei Zoo conducted a full health check-up for Yuan Zai, and the results all indicate that Yuan Zai is a perfectly healthy baby. The Taipei Zoo also specially designed bamboo tubes representing eight different careers for “Yuan Zai” to choose from during the “Zhua Zhou” (grabbing objects of fate) ceremony.

According to the zoo, an illustrator who often features the Malayan tapir in his drawings—where the tapir is usually jealous of how popular the giant pandas are—represents illustrators. The pangolin, skilled at digging burrows, symbolizes engineers. The orangutan, known for passing down life skills through three generations, represents teachers. The red-crowned crane, with its elegant posture and naturally long legs, stands for flight attendants. In addition, Yuan Zai happily enjoyed a custom-made birthday cake, and during the event, the lively and active cub occasionally lost balance and fell backward, looking especially cute and amusing.

To catch a glimpse of Yuan Zai, you can visit during the giant panda house opening hours from 9:10 AM to 5:10 PM. Additionally, the Taipei Zoo has extended its opening hours until 6:10 PM every Saturday from July 5 to August 23 in conjunction with summer vacation. Please note that the giant panda house is closed on the first Monday of each month, but if a national holiday falls on that day, the closure will be postponed.
