With the opening of the Tohoku Shinkansen, the area around Nanbu Town in Aomori Prefecture has become even more lively. Adjacent to Nanbu-Towada Station lies Tsuwano Shrine, a place for praying for bountiful harvests and peace. In May, the azaleas—designated as the town flower—burst into full bloom season, and the shrine holds the "Tsuwano Azalea Festival." This year’s event runs from May 11 to 25. Visitors to Nanbu Town can enjoy a 5-kilometer road leading to the shrine, lined with up to 500 clusters of mountain azaleas, all visible from the rest area.

In particular, from the wooden torii gate at the shrine entrance, looking up the mountain reveals slopes covered in vivid crimson flowers. Dominated by mountain azaleas, there are seven different varieties in total. As you ascend the stairs, the azaleas on both sides appear even more radiant, as if filtered through an enhanced lens. At night, special lighting illuminates the path, allowing visitors to appreciate the enchanting beauty of the azaleas after dark.
