Autumn is hot air balloon season in Saga, Kyushu, where hundreds of uniquely shaped, colorful balloons float slowly through the sky, making Saga’s blue heavens look especially soothing. With its vast plains and stable climate, Saga Prefecture is perfect for hot air ballooning. Every early November, the Saga International Balloon Fiesta is held along the Kase River in Saga. It is not only the largest of its kind in Japan but also the biggest hot air balloon event in Asia. The 2015 Saga International Festival will take place from October 29 to November 4.

Visitors can witness hot air balloon enthusiasts from around the world gathering together to fly hundreds of vibrant balloons into the sky. Not only is it a competition of skill, but also of design, attracting millions of visitors each year. Typical hot air balloon events are usually held between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., but there are also many special programs on-site that allow everyone to get up close to the balloons. In the evening, the fun continues with the “Night Glow & Concert,” where illuminated balloons are showcased under burner flames, accompanied by enchanting music to create a truly magical atmosphere.
