“Tsunoshima” is a small island floating on the “Kyoujima” sea area of the Sea of Japan, located in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The only connection between the two is the straight Tsunoshima Bridge, which resembles a line drawn across a blue canvas, leading to the island floating on an endless expanse of blue. This stunning view has been selected as one of the must-see world wonders before you die.

This Tsunoshima Bridge was opened at the end of 2000. Stretching 1,780 meters, it is located within the Northern Nagato Coast National Park and ranks as the third longest free-access bridge to an offshore island in Japan. On the mainland side in Yamaguchi Prefecture, the bridge is accompanied by vast stretches of pure white beaches and crystal-clear blue seas, creating an incredibly beautiful scene. Because the bridge was designed to blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape, special care was taken to limit the height of its pillars, ensuring it doesn’t appear obtrusive. From whichever angle you look at it, the Tsunoshima Bridge becomes a minimalist line on a blue canvas, giving a sense of infinite spatial extension. It has also served as a filming location for many car commercials and Japanese idol dramas.

One of Japan’s popular idol dramas, the “HERO Special Edition,” features a scene where the protagonists, played by Takuya Kimura and Takako Matsu, reunite while working on a case — and that scene takes place on Tsunoshima. As a result, the Tsunoshima Bridge has naturally become a pilgrimage site for fans.
