Japan’s waters are bustling with activity—not only does it have underwater postboxes and Christmas trees, but also a uniquely themed underwater shrine called “Suzaki Shrine.” To pay your respects, you must first dive into the water, accompanied by giant manta rays, whale sharks, and a variety of colorful tropical fish—it's quite an experience.

The underwater shrineSuzaki Shrineis situated in Hasama Undersea Park in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. It was placed underwater on1996(year)7(month)20(day), serving as a branch of theSuzaki Shrinein Tateyama City, Chiba. Due to the coastal location and frequent maritime traffic as well as diving activity, the shrine was established to ensure maritime safety and pray for peace in Tokyo Bay. However, this shrine, located18meters underwater, is generally inaccessible without diving skills.

One of the most unique features here is an inflatable tent set up for divers to rest. When tired, divers can poke their heads in to breathe air and even enjoy a drink. Additionally, the most popular time to visit is during9month and12month, especially on New Year’s Eve,31.9Month is also the season for spotting whale sharks, so visiting then offers the rare chance to swim alongside them. Each year from12(month)31(day) at11:50PM until1(month)1(day) at1:15AM, the underwater “Hatsumode” (first shrine visit of the year) event is held to welcome the New Year.
