As autumn and winter arrive, visiting Alishan not only allows you to enjoy the romantic red maple leaves but also offers Taiwan’s only winter-exclusive “firefly viewing” event. The sight of fireflies twinkling under the night sky—typically associated with spring and summer—is so breathtaking that it draws crowds of visitors. Alongside attractions like the forest railway, ancient tree trails, and vibrant maple foliage, this has become another highlight of Alishan’s winter tourism.

The “Prismagnathus snowfirefly,” visible in Alishan during winter, is not only a different species from the common spring and summer fireflies but also illuminates the night in a unique way. These fireflies are mainly found along the route from Fenchihu Railway Station to the Temple of the Earth God and from Fenchihu to Dadongshan. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the stunning Prismagnathus snowfirefly while walking along the forested ecological trail beneath Taiwan cypress and cedar trees in winter.
