Recently, due to prolonged drought in Chiapas, southern Mexico, the water level in a local reservoir has dropped, revealing a long-forgotten 16th-century abandoned church that had been hidden underwater for years, sparking widespread discussion.

The submerged church measures 61 meters in length, 14 meters in width, and has walls 10 meters high, with a bell tower standing 16 meters tall. It was built in the mid-16th century by a group of monks but was later abandoned due to a plague outbreak between 1773 and 1776. In 1966, the local government constructed the Nezahualcoyotl Reservoir in the Grijalva River basin, and the church became submerged after the reservoir was filled. It remained underwater until recently, when drought conditions caused the water level to drop, bringing the church back to the surface.
