But first, let’s explain how to get there. Getting to the Ghibli Museum is quite simple. The most common route is to take the JR Chuo Line to Mitaka Station, then walk left down the bridge from the south exit of Mitaka Station to reach the shuttle bus stop. Usually, you’ll spot the very recognizable Totoro shuttle bus waiting there—you won’t have trouble finding it.
The JR Chuo Line is quite long, but as long as you’re on a station along this railway line and head in the right direction, you’ll end up at Mitaka. The JR Yamanote Line, which is commonly used for getting around central Tokyo, can also get you there with a transfer at either Shinjuku Station or Akihabara Station.
Route 1: Shinjuku Station or Akihabara Station → JR Chuo Line → Mitaka Station South Exit → Totoro Shuttle Bus → Ghibli Museum in Mitaka
(Of course, if you have time to stroll a bit, walking along the Windy Path from Mitaka Station South Exit to the Ghibli Museum is also a nice option.)
Route 2: Kichijoji Station → Walk through Inokashira Park → Ghibli Museum in Mitaka
(That means getting off at Kichijoji Station, the stop before Mitaka Station, and then walking through the legendary Inokashira Park. Just head in the right direction and you’ll reach the Ghibli Museum at the other end of the park.)
