According to statistics, hotel bookings from Taiwan during the Lunar New Year holiday increased by 324.8% compared to the same period last year, making Taiwanese travelers the largest group among global visitors traveling to Japan during the Lunar New Year. Meanwhile, during the year-end New Year’s holiday, hotel bookings from Japan also saw significant growth, increasing by 70% compared to the previous year, ranking second only to Hong Kong.

In a survey of domestic travel destinations in Japan, areas outside the “Golden Route” saw strong growth, including Hokkaido, which ranked third last year and grew 151.4% compared to the same period last year. In addition, ski resorts and snow-view hot springs are extremely popular; the Furano, Biei, and Tomamu areas grew 386.3% compared to the same period last year, while Shiga Kogen, Yudanaka, Ishibu, Hakuba, and Kotani in Nagano Prefecture also saw significant growth.

Room bookings in Japan during the Chinese Lunar New Year were also impressive, with an increase of up to 263.7%. Hokkaido ranked first with strong growth of 157.1%, as the Sapporo Snow Festival was held during this period, and room bookings within the city continued to rise. Nearby Noboribetsu and Hakodate also saw growth of 376.9% and 376.9%, respectively, compared to the same period last year. Fukuoka Prefecture also jumped significantly from twelfth place to fifth. Overall, the Hokuriku region grew 42.7% compared to the same period last year, especially among Tokyo metropolitan area residents, whose bookings surged 66.6% due to the Hokuriku Shinkansen boom. Additionally, the Tohoku region as a whole saw about 1.4 times more bookings, growing 37.0% compared to the same period last year.

To promote domestic tourism, Japan issued “Hometown Travel Vouchers,” providing special travel subsidies that allow Japanese tourists to enjoy up to 50% discounts on hotels. According to statistics, domestic travel by Japanese tourists during the New Year’s holiday grew 22.2% compared to the same period last year. Thanks to these related subsidies and the increase in year-end bonuses in Japan, bookings for high-end accommodations surged, and the amount spent by Japanese tourists on domestic lodging also grew 3.5% compared to the same period last year.
