Tainan’s New Year’s Trilogy includes bidding farewell to 2015 with the white sunset at the Wapian Salt Fields in Beimen Jingzijiao, the New Year’s Eve party at the High-Speed Rail Tainan Station Plaza, and welcoming the 2016 sunrise at Erliau alongside a hiking event at Tiger Head Pond. While everyone is going crazy for New Year’s celebrations, the black-faced spoonbills are also making a special visit to Tainan. It is recommended to head to the Black-Faced Spoonbill Reserve in Qigu District, the main habitat of the spoonbills, to observe their presence. You can also explore the surrounding unique salt fields, oyster ponds, and mangrove ecology. In Qigu, foodies must also try the delicious seafood that showcases the charm of Tainan’s coastal fishing villages.

Winter is also the best season for hot spring bathing. You can visit Guanziling, the hot spring town, to enjoy a mud hot spring cleanse. After soaking, indulge in a delicious Wa’azi Chicken meal. The nearby Nanliao Community is currently in peak season for green-skinned ponkan oranges, so you can purchase fresh, local seasonal ponkans. Then continue on to the 175 Dongshan Coffee Avenue to taste the rich and aromatic Dongshan coffee. For those looking to experience the simple charm of rural life, Houpi Wumile is not to be missed. The surrounding farmland in fallow presents beautiful scenery, and you can also visit the Tugou Rural Art Museum, which is currently hosting the “House of the Village Contemporary Art Exhibition,” showcasing contemporary art aesthetics expressed through rural homes and enjoying the wonderful art of the countryside.
