If you want to escape the hustle and bustle, besides retreating into the mountains to live as a hermit, another option is to venture far from land and stay in the middle of the sea, where no one else is around. In North Carolina, USA, there is a sea lodge called “Frying Pan Tower” that offers just such an experience, allowing guests to stay 34 miles off the coast and enjoy the boundless sea and sky in complete isolation.

The “Frying Pan Tower” was built in 1964 as a lighthouse and formerly served as a station for the U.S. Coast Guard as well as a lighthouse for the Frying Pan area. The entire structure is divided into two levels: the upper lighthouse area and the lower living quarters, along with other facilities such as a kitchen, exercise room, and storage room. Later, after the lighthouse became automated, it gradually fell into disuse and was decommissioned in 2004. It wasn’t until 2010 that someone purchased the lighthouse and transformed it into a lodge. Guests can access it via helicopter or boat.
