From November to March each year, a vast freshwater lake in Kumphawapi District, Udon Thani Province, Thailand, seemingly comes to life, transforming into a vividly beautiful red hue as the lotus flowers across the lake blanket the surface in brilliant crimson. During this time, the entire lake area turns into a grand recreational paradise.

Nong Harn Lake is the most vital water source of the Nam Pao River and has even been ranked among the world’s top ten most extraordinary lakes. The lake area is rich in fish, wildlife, and aquatic plants, serving as a crucial lifeline for the local community. After a long period of dormancy, the lotus plants begin to awaken and sprout new buds starting in October, quickly growing into leaves and flower buds. By December, over 4,000 acres of the lake transform into a mesmerizing expanse of vibrant red, becoming a favorite spot for locals. The lotus flowers bloom from dawn until noon, with the blooming season lasting through March.

The best season to admire the red lotus sea is from November each year through February of the following winter. The optimal viewing time is between 6:00 AM and 11:00 AM, when the lotus buds are at their most beautiful, and you can also enjoy the spectacular sunrise. However, boats depart daily from Ban Diem Village in Kumphawapi District, Udon Thani Province, transporting visitors to view the lotus blooms all day long. While admiring the red lotus sea, visitors can also shop for the finest local products of Udon Thani Province. Udon Thani is located 564 kilometers northwest of Bangkok and can be reached via Highway 2.
